Buckeye Chase
Tom, Chuck and I left Flagstaff at 5am to chase a life bird, Smith's Longspur in a field at Tuthill and Pecos in Buckeye. The bird had been found earlier in the week and we knew how to find the bird.On our arrival we had flocks of 300 Lark Buntings and at least 1000 Red-winged Blackbirds but these soon departed. Starting at 7:30 we, and many others, walked back and forth across the large field until the bird flushed giving its obvious call note as it flew. Noting its landing position, everyone heads towards it and scopes the bird until it is found. We had excellent views on three occasions between 9:30 and 11:00. By then 50 birders had appeared, the largest group of chasers I had seen since the Baikal Teal in December 2010. As well as the Smith's we had a few Chestnut-collared Longspurs but the area was think with Horned Larks, Western Meadowlarks and sparrows - mostly Savannahs and Vespers.
I finished the first week of 2011 at 54 species for the year with one lifer.

First Few Days
I made a slow start to the year with just 9 species in my yard on the first day - although this included a rare visitor, Lewis's Woodpecker. A trip across town on the 2nd failed to locate the Snow Goose or Eurasian Wigeon that I'd seen on December 31st. By Friday 6th I had seen 39 species, the best being the Anthem Rufous-backed Robin seen on a quick visit back from dropping my son at Skyharbor.

The Year Ahead
As with last year, in 2012 I hope to do plenty of birding at the weekend and on my days off. I have some travel plans too, including a non-birding trip to Alaska on which I hope to find some lifers.
I had set myself the goal of at least 12 state birds in 2011, and managed 24. I will aim for 15 in 2012 - this would take me almost halfway to the magic 400. I will again set 250 as my Arizona goal; I beat that in 2011 but, in part, that was due to some chasing when David visited in May.
I had a goal of 50 lifers in 2011 and managed more than twice that courtesy of a trip to Thailand. In 2012, my big trip will be to Alaska and I will set an optimistic goal of 40 lifers for 2012. I should reach 500 ABA birds in 2012. My final goal is to see 400 species worldwide; well down on 2011’s 590 species but there will be no Thailand in 2012.
On my wanted list for the Four corners region in 2012 are Red-necked Grebe, Cackling Goose, Sage Grouse, Stilt Sandpiper, Black Tern, Gray Jay, Pine Grosbeak and the three species of rosy finch.

My 2011 birding year
I ended the year with 590 species, far more than I had expected courtesy of a guided trip to Thailand. My ABA total ended on 346 and there is no doubt that I should have made 350: I had failed to locate a Cassin's Vireo seen by my Camp Verde CBC team mates on January 2nd, seemed to be the only birder in Flagstaff to miss the Winter Wren at Picture Canyon in early January, did not chase warblers hard enough in the early summer and ended without Grace's and Red-faced Warbler. If you add to these the fact that I also failed to run into Virginia Rail, Williamson's Sapsucker or Red-breasted Nuthatch, and missed California Condor, Golden Eagle and Black-billed Magpie (which I would've got with more effort), I would have made it to 600.
My best birds in North America, both seen in Arizona, were Fan-tailed Warbler and Nutting's Flycatcher. Of my favorite birds, I saw 31 species of Anseridae, 4 grebes and 4 loons with Barrow's Goldeneye, Yellow-billed Loon and Red-throated Loon all being lifers. I also managed 11 gull species for the year, a definite personal best!
My year end total are as follows:

October-December Recap
I added 50 species in the year’s final quarter including 9 in Chicago and 20 in one day’s birding in central Florida.
Of the 21 birds in Arizona, 12 were state birds – Pectoral Sandpiper, American Redstart, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Glaucous-winged Gull, Barrow’s Goldeneye, Mew Gull, Long-tailed Duck, Rusty Blackbird, Thayer’s Gull, Glaucous Gull, Nutting’s Flycatcher and Red-throated Loon - doubling my state bird total for the year! 5 of these were lifers and another was new for me in the ABA area.

Flagstaff: Mt Elden CBC
The year ended as it had began with the Flagstaff: Mt Elden CBC, always held on the Saturday after Christmas Day. This time the temperatures were 40 degrees Fahrenheit warmer ranging from 27 to 58 degrees.
We saw 34 species with the highlights being a male Eurasian Wigeon and a Snow Goose. A Bald Eagle was on the snag at Lake Elaine when we arrived in the morning but soon disappeared and we saw no more eagles during the day. A single Cedar Waxwing was the best passerine. My year ended with the birds at the Purina plant – Common Raven, Eurasian Starling and Rock Pigeon! Worse birds than the three I had started the year with!

Triple Chase
Tom called on Friday with news of a Glaucous Gull at Lake Havasu. He had to chase this, his 450th Arizona bird. I went with him and we had the bird at the Pittsburgh Point lighthouse, courtesy of Lauren and David, when we arrived at 9:00. We then went to Bill Williams and, courtesy of helping hand from the iPod, had the Nutting's Flycatcher by 10:30. A short drive to Havasu Springs and a scan of the lake yielded the Red-throated Loon, on my third trip to find it!
This took me to 590 for the year with 347 in the U.S. and 276 in Arizona. The gull and loon took me to 112 lifers for the year. In addition, the flycatcher took me to 24 new state birds for 2011.
