August 2019 - Malaysia

My son and I spent August 1st-5th in Malaysia, where I stayed in Bangsar except for a single day that I spent with Cheong of Endemic Guides.

I was surprised to find that Common Mynas had been completely pushed out of Bangsar, replaced by Javan Mynas. The latter species was not found in the area when I had first gone to Malaysia but had quite common in recent years. On a walk to Lucky Garden at sunset we found a noisy roost in the trees between the Bangsar Villages. Otherwise the neighborhood birds were as expected except for a Purple Heron at the kolam on August 1st and a Pink-necked Pigeon in a tree on August 3rd. The latter was my first record in the area.

On Friday August 2nd Cheong picked me up at 6am and drove me to Bukit Tinggi. We arrived at 7:15 and went to a stake-out spot for two Galliformes species. The female Mountain Peacock-Pheasant was already there when we arrived, and after Cheong put some seed and worms out we had a bit if a wait until the male arrived, and an even longer wait until the Ferruginous Partridge came in to feed. We had wonderful views of both species.

It was clear that Oriental Magpie Robins and White-rumped Shamas were fully aware of the whereabouts of the free food as they stayed throughout our hour-long vigil at the site.

I had two other life birds - and so 5 in all - during our morning at Bukit Tinggi, with Yellow-throated Barbet (my 13th barbet species) and Yellow-bellied Warbler. Of the non-life birds the best was a lovely Orange-breasted Trogon.

After lunch we stopped at a private spot known to Cheong and a few others for a Blue-eared Kingfisher, another lifer and my 8th species of kingfisher in SE Asia.

We then headed to Ulu Langat where things were very quiet, and we struggled to find very many birds. We ended the day though with two further lifers - making it 8 for the day- a Tickell's Blue Flycatcher and Buff-necked Woodpecker - my 22nd species of woodpecker in SE Asia.

My son and I arrived in Brisbane on Friday July 26th for a two-part stay.

June 2019 - England

I spent the month of June, with a few days before and after, in England.

May 2019 - Belize and Guatemala

My wife and I took a red-eye flight from San Francisco to Miami on Sunday May 11th, and then a short hop in the morning to Belize City. We stayed in Belize until Thursday May 16th, with a trip to Tikal just across the border in Guatemala on Wednesday 15th.

February 2019

As always February was a slow month, and I added just 15 species for the year.

Arizona fared particularly badly as I added just one species, a Lincoln's Sparrow to my 2019 list. I added a total of 4 birds for Coconino, including two - Song Sparrow and Yellow-rumped Warbler - that I had seen in southern Arizona on my trip at the start of the year. But the highlight of the month was a new county bird, a Red-breasted Sapsucker in University Heights. I had seen this species in the state just once before, in Prescott; but this species is quite common around San Jose.

January 2019

I started the year well with 166 species in January, with 108 in Arizona and 119 in California. A count of 68 species in Coconino County was a personal best.

I started the year with the usual morning watching my feeders, and then a quick dash around town to kick off my year list. But I headed south on January 2nd to drop of my boys at the airports in Phoenix and Tucson. En route down I cruised the Santa Cruz Flats where the Mountain Plovers cooperated but the Crested Caracara did not. Similarly a stop at Reid Park disappointed with the Greater Pewee nowhere to be seen. Onto a snowy Madera Canyon where Santa Rita's feeders were full of life but no hummingbirds were about. The highlight was my lifer White-nosed Coatimundi.

With my boys home I headed to Patagonia on January 4th and added many species at a cold Paton's, finding a Violet-crowned Hummingbird just as I was about to leave. Onto Patagonia Lake to try, without luck, for the Green Kingfisher. I finished the day with a quick wander through Sweetwater. On the 5th I headed home via, initially the Glendale Recharge Ponds, where the basins were so full that they contained no shorebirds except for a few Least Sandpipers. I then drove to Sedona to find the Eurasian Wigeon was nowhere to be seen. I ran into Brooks who showed me a roost hole of a Western Screech Owl, another bird not cooperating!

I flew to California on January 8th, and spent the 9th close to home to start my Californis year list with 50 species I met Sergio the following day and we did a nice route with Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and American Bittern especially notable. On the 11th I headed out for a quick visit to Alviso ahead of predicted rains and found the Swamp Sparrow at the Marina, and then the female Mandarin Duck at Hall Memorial Park in Milpitas. My wife and I headed to Moss Landing on the 12th and added a number of coastal birds to the year list, but the Red-footed Booby eluded us at Santa Cruz.

Back in Flagstaff I headed north on Sunday 27th and added both Rosy-Finch species at the stakeout, and then had my best ever Arizona views of Barrow's Goldeneye, with a pair at Lake Powell. My run of missing expected birds continued with California Condors absent from Navajo Bridge.

The Year Ahead

I will again spend a combined 2 months in California, plan trips to the UK, Australia, and Malaysia in the summer, and to Bellingham in March. I am also likely to go to Chicago for a few days in August. Based on this I will set my World goal at 600 species and will set a North American target of 350 species, although I have not reached the latter in the past three years of similar travel. I will set targets of 200 for both Arizona and California, with 175 in both Coconino and Santa Clara.

Lifers will be hard to come by, but I have hopes of seeing the Red-footed Booby at the harbor in Santa Cruz in January. (The bird has been there for the past month.) Otherwise Bell’s Sparrow is my best bet. This is found along Mines Road close to San Jose.

My 2018 Birding Year

I ended the year with 371 species which was my lowest total for the year since my first year of keeping records on eBird (2011), and the first time I saw less than 400 species in that time. I saw 304 in North America (all but 3 in the United States) again missing the optimistic 350 target I had given myself.  I had 208 species in Arizona and 203 in California, meeting the goals of 200 I had set myself in each state. At the county level I saw 170 species in Coconino and 180 in Santa Clara, exceeding the respective targets of 150 and 175. Remarkably my totals for Santa Clara county and for California were exactly the same as in 2017for each place.
I saw 2 lifers in 2018, Fischer’s Lovebird and Great-crested Flycatcher, although the first these is not countable in North America. Black-winged Stilt was a UK life bird. Common Crane was a fourth ABA bird.  I added 4 species to my Arizona list with Pine Grosbeak, Eastern Kingbird and both Black and Gray-crowned Rosy Finches. Vermilion Flycatcher, Fox Sparrow, Herring Gull and Curve-billed Thrasher were also new for Coconino County. A Vesper Sparrow took my yard list to 98. I added 17 species to my California list, and a further 4 to those in Santa Clara County.
My bird of the year was my long sought after Great Crested Flycatcher, that I saw with my son in Chicago.

Birding highlights included finally catching up on Pine Grosbeaks and Rosy Finches in Arizona - the first time these species had visited the state for many years, and seeing the thousands of Ross's Geese at Merced National Wildlife Refuge.

My 170 species in Coconino had me in 19th spot – four spots higher than in 2017 - and my 180 in Santa Clara had me in 25th for the second year running. But these are a function of the number of people eBirding as much as anything else
