The East Rio and Koch Field

On Sunday January 10th I decided to try to get to 50 county birds for the year. With travel out of town on university business and a long weekend ahead this might be my last chance for a while. I did some homework on eBird and the listserve and headed out.

My first stop was a feeder on south campus that had been attracting Lesser Goldfinch. But the thistle sock was empty and I continued on to the East Rio with hopes of any of four sparrow species, Spotted Towhee .and Pinyon Jay. However the light quality was poor and except for a flock of 30-40 juncos I saw few birds in a 45 minute stay. Three American Wigeon flying over were new for 2016.

Heading back into town I detoured to do Rio Rancho Road, Stardust Trail and Koch Field Road and found a wet area with 200 Red-winged Blackbirds and a Song Sparrow in the reeds, and 9 Green-winged Teal and 3 Mallards in an area of open water. I was able to head home on 51 county birds although the day had not gone to plan.

Sedona

After a short stop at home after the eagle survey my wife and I headed down to Sedona. The snow on the red rocks under a blue sky was beautiful and many people were out and about with their cameras. My goal was to add to my Coconino list for 2016 by walking the Brewer Road (Palisades) neighborhood. I added Phainopepla, Western Scrub Jay and Bewick's Wren were new for the year;  Anna's Hummingbird and Ruby-crowned Kinglet were new for the county for the year. But overall it was not too birdy.  After a quick lunch we drove the the Sedona Heritage Museum on Jordan Road where I did not find any of the birds I'd hoped for, but instead added Chipping Sparrow for the year.

Bald Eagle Survey

I met Eric at 8:20 on Saturday morning, January 9th and we carried out the Country Club and Walnut Canyon route in cold temperatures (7-31F, -14 to -1C). We had 3 feet of snow during the week and so it was not possible to walk into a couple of areas but otherwise we made the usual stops at Lakes Elaine and Humphreys, the double ponds, clubhouse, FACE and Walnut Canyon ponds. The only Bald Eagle was on a snag overlooking Walnut Canyon ponds, and a Cooper's Hawk was perched nearby. We did not see much when we headed out to Walnut Canyon.

Walnut Canyon

With a wintry week forecast on Monday January 4th I headed out to Walnut Canyon National Monument o add to my year list. Arriving at around 11:30 I quickly found my target birds of Juniper Titmouse, American Robin and Townsend's Solitaire. I wandered around hoping to find some of the other birds we had seen here on December 26th and found a female Cassin's Finch before I headed back.

I stopped by the double ponds to add Bufflehead to my list and then spent 15 minutes looking for Acorn Woodpecker without luck at the trail head on St. Moritz.

On Tuesday January 5th I walked to the hospital to double check that a bird seen while driving back after an early meeting was what I thought, and confirmed Lewis's Woodpecker. I then drove across town and at the third attempt added Acorn Woodpecker for the year.

Phoenix

On Sunday January 3rd we drove to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway airport to put my son on a plane to Bellingham. In the area of the airport I added Mourning Dove, Black and Turkey Vultures and Northern Harrier to my 2016 list, as well as Great-tailed Grackle, Verdin and Curve-billed Thrasher while wandering around the car park!

We stopped at the Gilbert Water Ranch - just 15 minutes from the airport and en route home - for about half an hour where I added a further 15 species for the year, nothing special - this was just a quick grab for my list - 4 waders, 2 egrets, Green-winged Teal and a few songbirds. We then stopped at the Tempe Marketplace hoping to refind the Brown Pelican from three weeks ago. Alas the bird was not there but I added Great Blue Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron and Osprey for the year.

The final stop of the day was at Dos Lagos Park in Glendale where last year's male Eurasian Wigeon had returned - this time he was on the north pond and away from the road. The park also had Double-crested and Neotropic Cormorants sitting together and a Killdeer.

I added 32 birds for the year taking my 2016 total to 63.

First Days

I spent the first day of the year in my traditional way, watching my feeders and then walking the neighborhood. I began the day with a large mixed flock of Dark-eyed Juncos, House Finches and Pine Siskins and proceeded to get expected species through the morning. The biggest surprise was a Brown Creeper that stayed around visiting a suet feeder for a few hours. The only bird I did nto get compared to a year ago was Cassin's Finch, so few and far between this year. My walk down to Bashas and back produced a Merlin, a bird that I had failed to find in 2015.

On Saturday January 2nd I had an early success with a Red-naped Sapsucker in my yard. I then spent time, again following tradition, stopping by the lakes around town and adding waterfowl seen on the CBC. Temperatures had not gone above 3C all week and there was much less open water than a week ago. I found most expected birds, but saw no American Wigeon or Bufflehead. Instead I found a female Hooded Merganser on Lake Elaine and a male Northern Pintail on Lake Humphreys! I waited too long to find European Starling or Acorn Woodpecker in their well-known spots.

The Year Ahead

I have learned that 150 county birds and 250 state birds are good targets for me, and I will use these as my goals for 2016. My ABA goal is more difficult but although I failed on this in 2015 I will again aim for 350. A trip to Europe in June and July means that my world goal for 2016 is 450 species; if I also travel to Asia and/or Australia then 550 or 600 might be possible.

My top goal, the same as last year, is to reach 400 species for Arizona. This time I need just 3 new species. There are still some shorebirds I could pick up; Five-striped Sparrow, Bell's Sparrow, Sinaloa Wren, McCown's Longspur and Sprague's Pipit will be around; or I could make an effort to get Black-billed Magpie, Gray Jay or Chukar. Someday I will find Swamp Sparrow or Rose-breasted Grosbeak too.

Lifers will be hard to come by unless I embark on a tour. I have thought about Alaska, Bulgaria and China but have no current plans and cannot even guess at the number of lifers I might see.

My 2015 Birding Year

I ended the year with 522 species, plus a non-countable Cockateil, which far exceeded my goal of 450 species worldwide, partly due to the 26 species added on an unexpected business trip to China in December and a good number of birds in the UK with David following my Spain bird tour. I made my 250 Arizona bird target exactly courtesy of a couple of staked out birds on December 12th. I saw 166 species in Coconino, and my target of 150 was easily attained. I was happy with my ABA total of 306 species although this was less than my totals from the previous four years. I had left the state for short trips to Illinois in August, Washington/British Columbia in November neither of which delivered many species; my out-of-state birding was saved by a week in California in May.

I did not find everything of course - with some easy species missed. I did not catch up with Hermit Warbler, Red Crossbill or Gray Flycatcher although they were around in good numbers. I looked for Califonia Condor, Common Nighthawk, Arizona Woodpecker and Leconte's Thrasher without success.  I also failed to see Burrowing Owl, Merlin, Prarie Falcon or any species of longspur. In Arizona I also failed to find Common Loon, Wood Duck and Forster's Tern.

I had 77 lifers in 2013, many more than I had expected. My bird tour in Spain gave me 56 of these - including Wallcreeper, White-headed Duck and Lammergeier - and the trip to China another 17 - including Chinese Hwamei. Elsewhere I finally caught up with California Gnatcatcher, found Yellow-chevroned Parakeet withoiut looking for it, ran into Spotted Crake in the UK and then successfully chased a Tufted Flycatcher in Ramsey Canyon.

My bird of the year had to be Lammergeier. My first sight of this bird took my breath away. I also got to enjoy 7 shrike species, and saw several of my favourite birds - Hoopoe.

My year end totals are as follows:
